FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

The 8th Annual Joshua Tree Music Festival is May 14-16, 2010

The 5th Annual Joshua Tree ROOTS Music Festival is happening October 9-10, 2010.

These independently produced music festivals are held annually in the shadows of the infamous National Park. They are two (of the very few) multi-day campout music festivals in southern California. Music lovers of all ages enjoy phenomenal live music in an intimate setting and magical surroundings. The spring festival features an eclectic line up of performers; dance-world-electro-funk'n groove. The fall fest differs musically with artists of the rootsicana-newgrassy-folkadelic realms. Two different musical stylings create distinct audiences at the festivals. The town of Joshua Tree is located in the high desert of the magical Mojave, 50 minutes from Palm Springs, 2.5 hour drive from LA, 3 from San Diego, 3.5 from Vegas, 5 from Phoenix.

THE PEOPLE: The festivals are produced by a family of friends and funsters working together with the conviction that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The experience is enhanced when embraced in the great outdoors amongst fellow music lovers. Better still in an intimate setting, where the distinction between artist and audience is blurred, and a passionate performance can be truly relished in close proximity to the stage. THE MUSIC: The line up features talented artists who are not household names. Most likely you won't hear these artists on the radio, or see them at other major festivals. An eclectic, up & coming, white hot, have to see them now before they get big type of roster. Past performers include Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Bernie Worrell (P-Funk and Talking Heads), Dick Dale, Eric Burdon (the Animals), Robbie Krieger (the Doors); World Music Luminaries (Thomas Mapfumo & Blacks Unlimited (zim), John Butler Trio (AUS), Nortec Collective (MEX), Prezident Brown (Jamaica), Ganga Giri (AUS), Kinky (MEX), Kraak & Smaak (Netherlands), Extra Golden (Kenya), Chris Berry & Panjea (Zimbabwe), Meltone (JAP), African Showboyz (Ghana), Be Good Tanyas (CAN), Los Amigos Invisible (VEN), Ocote Soul Sounds (mex); Grammy Winners & Nominees (Dave Alvin, Kinky, Peter Case, Fareed Haque, Martha Scanlon, Nortec Collective, John Butler), New Orleans Funk & Rollers (Ivan Nevilles' Dumpstaphunk, Porter Batiste Stoltz, Trombone Shorty, Henry Butler, Papa Mali, Rhythm Council, Zydepunks, Lil' Brian & the Zydeco Travelers), and Jam-Tronic Innovators & Heavyweights (the Slip, Ghostland Observatory, JJ Grey, the New Deal, Garaj Mahal, Heavyweight Dub Champion, Zilla, Frequinox, Toubab Krewe, Railroad Earth, Eric Mcfadden, Lotus, Particle, Hot Buttered Rum).

THE LOCATION: The Joshua Tree Lake Campground (Joshua Tree, CA) is soul central station for the Festivals. Nestled against the Copper Mountains, bordering BLM land, with sweeping views of the otherworldly National Park, this 40 acre privately owned venue is an ideal intimate festival locale. Plenty of space in the campground. Hot showers & RV hook ups. Camping is a short stroll the lake area and music bowl. Two stages, a world market, and organic food purveryors complete the circle that is the music bowl. Live music alternates continuously on two stages in one area so you don't miss a note. 13,000 square feet of shade cloth flies over the audience. The one acre oval lake area is surrounded by Art Installations, Kidsville, shady nooks, the playshop stage and funky vignettes. Google Earth (2601 Sunfair Road Joshua Tree, Ca) the site; the top half of the property is all camping, the lower right quadrant is the lake area with music bowl below it.

THINGS YOU WILL FIND: Free drinking water in the music bowl. Heaps of shade cloth covering the audience. No service charges on your reasonably priced ticket. Playshops. Organic Food & Bevvies. No large crowds, security checks or waiting in lines. Recycling-composting by team Green Mary. One band playing at a time (so you get to see EVERY performance). Kidsville facilitated by Mama's of Joshua Tree. Festival Olympics (aka random technical challenges). Kundalini Yoga classes. Didg Breathing Classes. Art Installations, Lux Lounge, Boogaloo Saloon & JavaGogo Organic Espresso Bar. No extra fees for large vehicles. World Market. Friendly, helpful crew. Celebratory souls cultivating their eccentricities. Rampant hoopmania. Complete absence of large corporate banners/sponsors. Starry starry nights. Friends that remain so long after the festival ends.

WHO GOES?: The festivals are family friendly events, creating an all ages audience. The eclectic line ups draw a diverse crowd of discerning live music fans who love the outdoors. A slightly younger audience at the spring fest; clearly a reflection of the musical styles. The National Park is one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the world (2 million visitors per annum); people come to climb and dance. Fully half of the folks are from Southern California, yet 25% come from out of state. This is a desirable festival destination. Many come for the festival and stay for a vacation of camping and adventure in the park. In these economic times, park officials predict more visitors from the region this year, as folks are more inclined to vacation closer to home, more affordably.
